A note from the Artistic Director
Dear family, friends, and supporters,
Welcome to our performances of Pointe CounterPointe! As many of you know, we had two cancelled shows in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While we had no choice, these cancellations were a great disappointment for all of us as its been almost 2 full years since we performed onstage! This weekend is so special for West Point Ballet and its students as these performances represent the endurance and perseverance of our dancers. In such a tumultuous time, it’s tempting to just bunker down and wait for the storm to pass. But each time we have the privilege of teaching your children, we are reminded of this quote by Matshona Dhliwayho, “It is better to dance in the rain than to freeze in the storm.”
Pointe CounterPointe has been reimagined to function within the framework of a very interesting and restricting time. We certainly look forward to the day when all of our dancers can be showcased in the same performance, in front of a packed audience bursting at the seams. But until then, we present this show to you in five micro-performances in accordance with local regulations for large gatherings. I started West Point Ballet in 2018 with the hope of creating an environment where dancers could learn to work hard, develop discipline and personal growth, and above all, establish a love for the art form of ballet. I am so pleased with their progress in all of these areas. It is truly a dream come true for me.
I would like to thank my incredible faculty for their time, talents, and energy: Hannah Hurd, Mariah Edmunds, and Sharlee Peay. We wouldn’t be here without the class moms, ushers, and other volunteers for contributing their time at the dress rehearsal and performances. I also need to recognize many members of my own family for their continued support and manpower to help pull off performances at this caliber. Thank you to my husband Mike, for without whom West Point Ballet would surely not exist in any form. Finally, thank you parents for your faith in me and support of this program.
Enjoy the show!
Kind regards,
Juliana Martin
