Peter and The Wolf

Synopsis
The adventure begins when the Wolf  lurks about searching for trouble, sneaking away just before Peter heads out to play in his front yard. Peter begs Grandfather to let him go search for the Wolf but Grandfather will not allow it, warning Peter that the Wolf might attack him -- or worse! Peter and the Duck hatch a plan to sneak away as soon as Grandfather falls asleep. They make their way into the Meadow outside Peter's neighborhood. In Peter's search for the Wolf, he plays in the Meadow, where he and the Duck discover beautiful flora: Pas de Fleur, Rosebuds, and Flowers. The Bumblebees buzz around the Flowers, and everyone is delighted when Queen Bee hums into the Meadow. The Bird spreads her wings and Peter plays with his newfound feathered friend. The Baby Birds take flight and Peter bids them farewell as they head back to their nest. Peter is determined to find the Wolf, and he has an eerie feeling that the Wolf is nearby. Peter continues his search for the Wolf and discovers a beautiful pond. The Duck is happy to be back on the water until the Bird tries to pick a fight. The feathered foes argue about which bird is best: a bird who can fly or a bird who can swim? Peter tries to break up the fight and asks everyone to get along. The Ducklings happily splish and splash in the Pond.
The Cat lazily scratches around until a surprise encounter with the Bird and Duck turns into a chase. Peter plays with the Cat and Kittens before Princess Lollihops and the Frogs jump into the Pond in search of some delicious bugs to eat. Peter is having a wonderful time on his adventure, when Grandfather tracks him down, demanding he stop this silly nonsense of trying to catch the Wolf. Doesn't Peter know the Wolf might try to kill him?! Grandfather drags Peter back home. And it's a good thing too since the Wolf is on the prowl. Peter isn't the only person trying to catch the Wolf. The Hunter is hot on his tail but the Wolf eludes him yet again. Peter asks the Hunter if he can tag along on the Hunter's search for the Wolf and the two head out together. The wind blows in some bright fluffy Clouds and Lady Nimbus. The clouds clear and some funny Bunnies hop into the clearing led by the energetic Countess Cottontail. As the Bunnies spring away, some beautiful Butterflies soar into view along with the elegant Madams of Monarch.
Bird and Duck have reconciled from their earlier fight and are getting along. Unbeknownst to them, the Wolf is stalking them. At the right moment, the Wolf makes his move, and to everyone's horror, he swallows the Duck whole! Peter confronts the Wolf, who somehow sneaks away yet again. Peter calls on the help of the Hunter and Huntresses to find the Wolf. At last, Peter has caught the Wolf! Everyone is so thrilled that the predator is finally in captivity and under the protection of the Hunter and Huntresses, and they set out to march the Wolf towards the zoo. The Wolf looks sick to his stomach and after a few nauseating moments, he spits out the Duck, who has remarkably survived! All of Peter's friends race to the scene when they hear that the Wolf has been caught. Peter and the Duck recount their tales and everyone is so angry with the Wolf. Realizing his sorry fate, the Wolf has a change of heart and pleads for forgiveness. After some hesitation, Peter decides he wants to be friends with the Wolf after all.

A note from the Artistic Director

Dear family, friends, and supporters,

Welcome to our performances of Peter and The Wolf!  I am thrilled to have you here supporting our incredible dancers. While every performance we have is a special event, Peter and The Wolf marks an important benchmark for our program as it is our first-ever story ballet. We have delightfully reimagined this classic symphonic fairytale into a charming story ballet that tells the tale of eager Peter searching for the Wolf. This ballet is such a wonderful opportunity for our dancers to showcase not only their ballet technique, but to really dive into their artistry and develop storytelling skills. This might be the first time that West Point Ballet dancers have had the chance to perform a story ballet, but it certainly won't be the last.
It has been an incredible experience creating this ballet on our dancers and seeing them experience the magic of storytelling.

Like so many things in the last 14 or so months, we were not sure for a long time if these performances would be able to proceed. We feel so lucky, grateful, and excited to be able to present this production! I am so proud of our students and the resilience they have illustrated since the pandemic began. Everything has changed for them countless times and we as ballet instructors feel privileged to be a consistent positive force in their lives.

I would like to thank my amazing faculty for their time, talents, and energy: Hannah Hurd, Mariah Edmunds, Sharlee Peay, Bethany Davis, Madyson Wertzbaucher and Stephanie Humeniuk. We wouldn’t be here without the class moms, ushers, and other volunteers for contributing their time at the dress rehearsal and performances. I also need to recognize many members of my own family for their continued support and manpower to help pull off performances of this caliber. Thank you to my husband Mike, without whom West Point Ballet would surely not exist in any form. Finally, thank you parents for your faith in me and support of this program.

Enjoy the show!

Kind regards,

Juliana Martin
